Monteverdi & the Italian Baroque

  • St Matthew's Anglican Church 130 Glebe Avenue Ottawa, ON, K1S 2C5 Canada (map)

Seventeen Voyces brings the Italian Baroque - and an unusual instrument - to Ottawa.

Seventeen Voyces - Ottawa’s premier chamber choir - will present the music of the Italian Baroque on Sunday, February 25 at 4:00 p.m. at St. Matthew’s Anglican Church in the Glebe (concert entrance on Glebe Avenue near Bank Street). Tickets are $30, $20 for students and free for children 12 and under. Tickets can be purchased online at www.seventeenvoyces.ca and at the door (cash, credit and debit cards accepted).

Seventeen Voyces choir, led by founder and director Kevin Reeves, has been enchanting Ottawa audiences with an eclectic repertoire of early and modern music for over a quarter of a century. Their February 25th concert will present the music of the great Baroque composer Claudio Monteverdi, who was born in Italy around 1567. The concert will feature many solos by members of the choir as well as from rising opera star Joel Allison. Allison, formerly a member of Seventeen Voyces, now performs regularly in opera houses in Europe and is currently on stage in the Canadian Opera Company’s production of Don Giovani in Toronto. Seventeen Voyces is delighted to welcome him back for this special performance.

The concert will also feature Montreal-based musician Kerry Bursey playing the theorbo, a sixteenth-century instrument from the lute family. Bursey is an early music specialist who also plays the guitar and sings in a number of Montreal area ensembles, including Studio de musique ancienne de Montréal and the Theatre of Early Music. He is a past winner of the Grand Prix de Guitare de Montréal and has recorded extensively on labels including Deutsche Grammaphon and ATMA Classique.
